Cloudy or Green Pool Water in Ontario: Causes, Fixes and How Fast It Clears

Cloudy pool water is the most common complaint we get between June and August, and green pool water is the one that panics people. Both are fixable, usually without draining anything, and both come down to a short list of causes. This guide walks through diagnosing which one you actually have, the correct pool shock treatment dose for an Ontario-sized pool, algae removal that works rather than the version that wastes a weekend, and honest timelines for how long clearing really takes.

First, Diagnose What You Actually Have

Cloudy and green are different problems with different fixes, and treating one as the other wastes chemicals and days. Start with a proper test. A drugstore test strip is fine for a quick check but poor at the extremes, so if the water is badly off, use a liquid drop kit or take a sample to a shop that runs a photometer.

That last row catches a lot of Ontario pool owners. Cyanuric acid, the stabiliser in chlorine tablets, builds up all season and never leaves except through dilution. If you have used pucks all summer and your chlorine reads fine but the pool still will not clear, high cyanuric acid is a very likely culprit. The only fix is partial drain and refill.

The visual test

  • Hazy but blue, bottom visible: mild cloudiness, usually filtration or chemistry
  • Milky white, bottom faint: calcium or fine particulate, needs a clarifier and filter work
  • Cloudy with a green tint: algae in its early stage, act now and it is a one day fix
  • Distinctly green, bottom not visible: established algae bloom, plan for three to five days
  • Dark green or swampy: heavy bloom, expect a week and consider professional help
  • Clear but with dark spots on surfaces: black algae, a different and more stubborn problem

The Five Causes of Cloudy Pool Water

When water is cloudy but not green, work through these in order. The first is by far the most common in Ontario, and it is the one people are least willing to believe.

1. The filter is not running long enough

Ontario hydro is expensive and homeowners trim pump run times to save money. A pool needs a full turnover of its entire volume every day, and on a single speed pump that usually means eight to ten hours minimum through the summer. Six hours is not enough in July heat. If you have cut your run time and the water went hazy, you have found your answer. This is also the strongest argument for a variable speed pump, which lets you run twelve hours for less money than eight hours on a single speed.

2. The filter itself is fouled or failing

Check the pressure gauge. If it reads more than eight to ten PSI above your clean baseline, the filter is loaded and needs backwashing or cleaning. If you have cleaned it and pressure stays high, the media is exhausted. Sand needs replacing roughly every five to seven years, cartridges every two to three, and DE grids every seven to ten.

3. High pH with high calcium

This combination is the usual chemistry cause of persistent milky water. Above pH 7.8, dissolved calcium starts falling out of solution as microscopic particles that are too fine for the filter to catch easily. Bringing pH down to 7.2 to 7.4 often clears the water within a day without any other intervention.

4. Low sanitizer and early algae

Algae does not appear green overnight. It starts as a faint haze and a slightly slippery feel on the walls. If free chlorine has been reading below 1 ppm, treat this as early algae and shock now, while it is a single evening of work rather than a week.

5. Heavy bather load or a storm

A pool party with fifteen people introduces an enormous organic load: sunscreen, body oils, sweat, and cosmetics all consume chlorine and cloud water. A summer thunderstorm washes pollen, dust, and phosphates off the deck and into the pool. Both cause temporary cloudiness that resolves with a maintenance shock and a full day of filtration.

Green Pool Water and Algae Removal

Green pool water means one thing: sanitizer has been at or near zero long enough for algae to establish. That happens after a vacation, after a pump failure, following a heavy storm, or when a salt cell quietly stopped producing. Understanding which type of algae you have determines how hard the fight will be.

Green algae, the common one

Free floating, turns the whole body of water green, and responds well to chlorine. This is the type most Ontario pools get, and a correct shock plus continuous filtration clears it in three to five days. It is annoying but not serious.

Mustard or yellow algae

Appears as yellowish dust on walls and floors, most often on the shaded side of the pool, and brushes away easily only to return the next day. It is chlorine resistant and needs a higher shock level held for longer, plus scrupulous cleaning of everything that touched the water, including brushes, hoses, and swimwear.

Black algae, the stubborn one

Dark spots with a hard protective cap, rooted into plaster or concrete surfaces. It is rare in vinyl liner pools, which is a genuine advantage of the liner pools that dominate Ontario backyards. Removal means physically breaking the protective layer with a stainless steel brush, applying chlorine directly to the scrubbed spot, and holding a high chlorine level for several days.

The green pool recovery sequence

  • Step 1: Test and lower pH to 7.2. Chlorine at pH 8.0 is roughly a quarter as effective as at 7.2, so skipping this step wastes most of your shock.
  • Step 2: Brush every surface hard. Walls, floor, steps, behind the ladder, into the corners. Brushing breaks algae loose so chlorine can reach it.
  • Step 3: Shock heavily at dusk, triple dose for light green and quadruple for dark.
  • Step 4: Run the filter continuously, 24 hours a day, until clear. Backwash or clean whenever pressure climbs 8 to 10 PSI.
  • Step 5: When the water turns from green to cloudy grey, that is dead algae. Add clarifier, or flocculant if it is heavy, and vacuum to waste.
  • Step 6: Retest, rebalance, and hold chlorine at 3 ppm for a week to prevent a rebound.

The mistake that costs a week: shocking in the middle of a sunny afternoon. Unstabilised chlorine has a half-life of about 45 minutes in direct summer sun. Most of what you pour in at 2pm is gone before it has done any work. Shock at dusk, run the pump overnight, and you will get several times the effect from the same bag.

Pool Shock Treatment: Doing It Correctly

A pool shock treatment raises free chlorine far above normal to burn through organic contaminants and chloramines. The dose depends on your pool volume and how bad the situation is. Most Ontario residential inground pools hold between 45,000 and 75,000 litres.

Shock safety rules that actually matter

  • Pre-dissolve on vinyl. Undissolved calcium hypochlorite granules sitting on a vinyl liner will bleach a permanent white patch. Dissolve in a bucket of pool water and pour it in around the perimeter.
  • Never add shock through the skimmer. Concentrated chlorine passing through the pump and heater damages both, and if it meets any residual acid it produces chlorine gas.
  • Never mix shock types. Calcium hypochlorite and trichlor react violently. Keep them in separate containers and never in the same bucket.
  • Pump running, always. Shock added to still water settles and does nothing useful.
  • Wait to swim. Free chlorine must fall back below 5 ppm, usually 24 hours after a heavy shock.

Realistic Clearing Timelines

Everybody wants a same-day fix. Here is what actually happens, assuming continuous filtration and correct chemistry.

Mild cloudiness: 24 to 48 hours

Correct the cause, run the filter continuously, and it clears within two days.

Post-shock haze: 1 to 3 days

Normal and expected. The filter is removing dead organic matter.

Light green to clear: 3 to 5 days

Day one green fades, day two grey cloudiness, days three to five progressive clearing.

Swamp green: 5 to 10 days

Multiple shocks, repeated filter cleaning, and often a partial drain. Worth calling for help.

When to stop and reassess: if the water is still cloudy after four days of continuous filtration with balanced chemistry, the filter is the problem. Look for a torn cartridge or grid, a channelled sand bed, or media that is simply past its service life. No amount of chemical will overcome a filter that is not filtering.

Ontario-Specific Triggers

Several causes of cloudy and green water are particular to the way pools are used and maintained here.

The spring opening bloom

A pool that sat under a cover from October to May has had seven months of darkness, no circulation, and decaying leaf matter. Opening to green water is normal, not a failure. Pools opened early, in late April rather than late May, generally have an easier time because the water is still cold enough to slow algae growth while you get chemistry established.

July and August heat waves

Water above 28 degrees consumes chlorine dramatically faster and algae reproduces faster. A pool that held 2 ppm comfortably in June can drop to zero in two days during a GTA heat wave. Increase testing frequency to every second day when the forecast climbs.

Spring pollen and summer storms

Southern Ontario gets a heavy tree pollen load in May and June that coats pool surfaces and feeds algae. Thunderstorms wash phosphates and organic debris off decks and lawns into the water. Both consume sanitizer quickly, and both are reasons to shock preventatively rather than reactively.

Salt cells slowing in cool water

Salt chlorine generators reduce output significantly below about 15 degrees, which in Ontario means early June and again in September. Owners of salt pools often see an unexplained algae bloom at the shoulders of the season purely because the cell was not keeping up. Supplement with liquid chlorine during those weeks.

Keeping It Clear

Prevention costs a fraction of recovery. Four habits prevent almost every case we get called about.

  • Test twice a week through July and August, not once a month. Chlorine and pH move fast in heat.
  • Run the filter long enough. A full turnover daily, minimum eight hours on a single speed pump and twelve or more on a variable speed.
  • Brush weekly. Thirty seconds along the walls and steps disrupts algae before it establishes. The shaded corners matter most.
  • Shock on a schedule, every two weeks in season and always after a storm or a party, rather than waiting for a problem.
